about

A folktale from Kenya. After years of drought, thirst had driven the villagers to the brink of despair. They went to the medicine man and asked, “What can we do to reverse our misfortune?” He replied, “The beautiful maiden Wanjairu must be sacrificed to bring the rain.” Horrified but desperate, the villagers called Wanjairu to the village square and, surrounding her in a circle, they commanded her to dance. As she danced, each family approached her and sacrificed a goat as a payment for her life. Wanjairu danced for days, until, finally, she danced herself to death. Then she sank into the earth and was lost. And the rains came. And all went home happy except a single warrior who loved Wanjairu and vowed to find her. For years he searched high and low until, at the end of the earth, he discovered her deep in a cave. The warrior nursed her back to health, then returned with her to the village. When Wanjairu’s family saw her again, they were shocked and delighted and ran to embrace her, but the warrior fought them away saying, “You who would sacrifice Wanjairu to bring the rains will have nothing to do with her!” With the passing of time, however, the warrior’s heart softened and he forgave those who had given their goats for Wanjairu’s life, and all lived happily together.
